Stocks to Watch - 9 Feb 2016 - 5 stocks to defy the downturn

VTG - Vita Group (Retailing)
DRM - Doray Energy (Gold)
AGL - Australian Gas Light
IGB - iShares Treasury
IAF - iShares Composite Bond

The Share Market has had one of those down days today - worldwide. Just up until today, things seem to be settled a little, then the dramatic drop today. In such a market, the one advice is to stay out, unless one plan to short some stocks.

Surprising the five mentioned above has been doing quite well recently. And for investors who wish to park their money somewhere, then these five are worth investigating further.

AGL - a venerable gas company, whether you call it blue chip or not, it has been around for years. It has all the advantages of incumbency over new players who would face barriers of entry. It is not recognized as a growth stock usually - but take a look at its graph below - growth chasers wouldn't complain about AGL's recent performance while others are falling. Good for small growth and to ride out the storm.

Doray Energy - Gold miners have been doing well in the past 6 months due to the worldwide market downturn. This small gold miner is interesting in various respects. Not only is it trending up nicely, it does have positive earnings and a low PE. Definitely warrant deeper investigation. Aimed at the Speculator.

VTG - This group has been doing well recently. Though the last few days, it has been retracing, the general performance has been good over the past year. May be a good choice for moderate growth and to hold during periods of uncertainty.

IGB and IAF - both of these are ETFs in Bonds. For those who really want to play it safe, yet may still want a positive outcome during market downturn, these are two ETFs worth looking at. As the general rule goes, if the stock market is going down, people tend to switch asset classes and bonds is one class to consider.

Notes on Vector Vest Strategies

***Disclaimer: These notes are for personal use only

Signs for Selling Shares
1. Increase volume, lower highs, lower lows
2. P < 40 day Moving average
3. RT < 1.0
4. Sell rating

Good stocks for Retirement
RS >= 1.25     - safe stocks, more predictable, less risk, based on fundamental ratios, eg debt to equity.
YSG >= 1.00   - stability of dividends, assurance that dividends will be as good in the future. Shows that company is confident in increasing its future earnings.
CI >= 1.25   - from looking at price history, where the price is increasing consistently.
Sort by VST desc,

Combination for buying stocks in a bear market
RT Kicker Combo / SP500 Ascending
Bear Market Beaters  / Marathon
Gain Loss of 50/10
The key is the Marathon search which is used during a bear market, by people who still want to buy stocks in bear market period.

High VST newcomers
This search aims to catch stocks which have recently reached significant levels in their VST ratings. The original search looks for trends with the last two periods having VST <1.40 and VST > 1.40 respectively. This indicates the VST value has increased the 1.40 levels.

Stocks based on Top Industry
Overall Market -> Sector -> Industry -> Stock
- Use RT as a measure of top Industry
- Within the Industry, we still choose Stocks using VST as the measure.
- In Top Industry, most stocks should be performing well, ie more Buy Recommended.

How to use Industry Ranking
This is about finding stocks in Industry, where the Industry RT ranking is improving, ie Rank becomes better.
'Stocks Industry Group' = 'Top Delta Industries' -> 'Highest 10 by 10 Day RT Delta'

How to beat Hyper-Inflation

Here is a collection of notes from various sites on hyperinflation.

http://seekingalpha.com/article/96723-what-effect-will-hyperinflation-have
An excellent article on inflation, with examples from recent history. It does a good comparison between modern US and the Weimar Republic of Germany in the 1920s. At the end it has some brief tips of what to do in case hyper inflation hits your country. Some suggestions include:
---------------
Cash in the form of government and/or corporate bonds, money in CDs and other bank accounts, will be hit the hardest. General index fund type of investments, such as DIA, SPY, QQQ, and the like will also be very bad investments. Stocks, in general, do not do well in a highly inflationary environment. However, if the Weimar experience is any guide, stocks will do much better than bonds or cash. Financial and retail stocks, however, will be the worst investments of all equities sectors. The best investments, in contrast, will be gold, silver, shares of companies whose assets consist of modern plant & equipment, productive lands, and other hard assets that will retain value.

Top Stocks from Lincoln and V.Vest 2Feb12

Lincoln Top 10 stocks published in the Money Magazine, March 2012 issue, are:
Silver Lake (SLR)
Miclyn Express (MIO)
Monadelphous Group (MND)
Consolidated Media (CMJ)
Credit Corp Group (CCP)
Tax Free Solutions (TOX)
REA Group (REA)
McMillan Shakespeare (MMS)
Forge Group (FGE)
Ausdrill (ASL)

The Lincoln stocks above were ranked as at 2 Feb 2012

The stocks below are obtained on the same date at 2 Feb 2012 using the Vector Vest system. Two systems using quite different technical metrics to come up with a list of top 10 stocks at the same date. We would expect the list to be different since there are almost 1700 stocks analysed. But there are 2 stocks appearing on both lists. They are:

Silver Lake (SLR)
Credit Corp Group (CCP)

Fast forward to today, and looking at a list of Top 20 stocks on 23 March 2012 according to Vector Vest, the stocks that are also in Lincoln's list are:

Credit Corp Group (CCP)
McMillan Shakespeare (MMS)
Ausdrill (ASL)

So the stand out consensus is CCP. Although SLR has been quite strong in the past few months, recently its trend is down. Both MMS and ASL appear to be consistently strong over the last few months.
