List of Blue Chip Companies - Argo Investments

The purpose of this article is to show a list of blue chip companies being invested by Investment Companies - in this case - Argo Investments.

Picking blue chip companies are easy or hard depending on who you are. If you are new to the market, the fact that there are over a thousand companies in the Australian sharemarket makes it a daunting task to even start analysing. Why not look at what the experts are investing.

Currently, the bear market is over a year old - and most people recognised this is going to be one of the worst economic downturns in history. Yet in terms of the sharemarket, clever investors are preparing to dive back in any time now, waiting for the signal that the market has bottomed. Even when the share market starts picking up again, the economy will be in the middle of a great struggle. Companies that are able to survive will be the blue chip companies that keep on producing and coming out of the recession strongly. So that is why we are focussing on blue chips.

Argo investments have been around for more than a decade. While I have not done a thorough analysis, it has done relatively well in the six months to 31 Dec 2008. I present here the list of principal investments of Argo Investments as a guide and starting point for picking blue chip companies.

Hi -

Great blog, especially like the Technical Analysis.

Random question, not related to your post directly, but I don't see another way to contact you... and you seem like someone who would know:
Where can I find prices of Australian fixed income online? ie., Gov, semi-gov, and corporate bonds denominated in AUD. The public Bloomberg site has some government bonds, but not all, and nothing on corporates. The newspaper sites have nothing. And lots of Gooogling around hasn't helped me at all. Would you have any suggestions?

Thanks,

Alan P

Dear Alan,

I have not looked into fixed income in detail. But I found something on Treasury (ie. Govt?) Bonds at:

http://www.asx.com.au/products/futures/interest_rates/bonds.htm

With corporate bonds, try contacting the company / corporate individually.

Sorry I can't help you more.

By the way, see my latest post on ASX commodities.

Thanks, Elkanah. I saw the ASX futures page; they also have interest rate securities, but unfortunately, they don't have much.. and none of it is traded enough on the exchange to have real prices. I'm still looking, so if you (or anyone out there!) does come across a good site with prices/yields for AUD fixed income, I'd definitely appreciate!

Interesting post on the ASX commodities. Palladium, anyone? ;-)

Best...

Hi Kiwi,

I came across another page on the ASX on interest rate securities. Not sure if you have seen this yet.

http://www.asx.com.au/asx/markets/displayInterestRateSecurities.do

You can navigate by first going to the "Prices" on the Left Navigation Column. And then on the second level Horizontal tabs, click "Interest Rate Securities".

They have Corp Bonds, Floating Rate Notes, Convertible Notes, Hybrid Securities. But I don't see Govt Bonds.

Cheers

Thanks, Elkanah, appreciate. That page is useful, but unfortunately it doesn't have most of the liquid Aussie fixed income (gov, semi-gov, corporate). Those bonds trade OTC, so the exchange info is limited.

In other countries, you can find fixed income prices and rates (even for OTC products) for free at different online sites (investinginbondseurope.org, for example). But I've no luck in finding anything similar for Australian fixed income.

Thanks!
